The Dawn of Grace by Sixpence None the Richer : Christmas CD Review
Custom Search
Sixpence None the Richer is perhaps most famous for Kiss Me and their version of There She Goes, but one of the more recent offerings is a heartfelt Christmas album entitled “The Dawn of Grace.”
Like many albums, the first half is stronger than the last. Yet, the strong opening is well worth the cost of the album. Here are some highlights:
- Angels We Have Heard on High : I really enjoy this take on one of the most famous carols. Acoustic guitar and drumset back ethereal vocals.
- The Last Christmas Without You : From the title you might think this was love song, but instead this is a thoughtful lullaby to an unborn child, a celebration of the gift of life. I LOVE this song. It is beautifully written and performed. It is a wonderful new addition to the body of Christmas songs.
- O Come O Come Emmanuel : This reminds me a little of Tom Petty. Not many artists tackle an upbeat version of this song. Very welcome.
- Silent Night : A GREAT version of this beloved classic. I am in love with the counter melody that they came up with. Beautiful.
- Riu, Riu, Chiu : Another unusual pick, a wonderful Spanish carol that is sung very often by choirs. Makes a good translation.
- Carol of the Bells : Edgy version.
- Christmas for Two : Nice Christmas love song, with all the fun cliches thrown in.
The last 3 songs on the album are not among my favorites. Overall, this is a really nice album. I give it four out of five on the jingle-meter. You can listen to the entire album on Lala or get it at Amazon.
